The Japanese Twinning Program is a municipally-led, community based initiative intended to provide Stony Plain and Shikaoi residents with the opportunity to experience international cultures.
Our International Exchange Programs
The towns of Stony Plain and Shikaoi support five exchange programs: the Host Family Program, the Student Delegation, the Adult Delegation, the Long-Stay Program, and the Assistant English Teaching (AET) Program. Each program provides the community with an opportunity to gain new knowledge, a deeper cultural understanding, and lifelong friends.
Host Family ProgramEvery October, approximately 75 Grade 10 students from Shikaoi visit Stony Plain for 10 days. More than thirty host families are needed to house Japanese exchange students.
Tri-region residents with an open heart and an open mind are encouraged to apply as a host family. For more information, please read our Host Application Package below:
Here are testimonials from a few of our previous host families:
Every July, the Town sends a student delegation to Shikaoi for two weeks. Students spend most of their time touring and visiting with their host family. It is a fantastic opportunity for students interested in expending their worldview.
Selection CriteriaThe applicant must:
- Be a student in Grades 9-12 and be between the ages of 14-18 at the time of application
- Be available for travel in the month of July
- Host students during their annual delegation visit to Stony Plain
- Have or be able to obtain a valid passport
Long Stay Exchange Program
- We are currently accepting applications for 2018. Application deadline is December 1, 2017.
Adult DelegationEvery two or three years, the Town of Stony Plain arranges for adults within the community to visit Shikaoi. Delegates spend most days touring as a group and most nights visiting with their assigned host family.
- The next delegation of adults is tentatively scheduled for 2017.
Assistant English Teaching (AET) ProgramEvery few years, there is an opportunity for one Stony Plain resident to live in Shikaoi and help teach English. Generally, AET's are expected to have a background in teaching and Japanese culture or language.
- The AET position is currently filled.
About the Japanese Twinning Program
In 1985, Stony Plain and Shikaoi joined the Japanese Twinning Program. Both communities share much in common: they are proud of their strong agricultural roots, they celebrate their culture and heritage through annual festivals and events, and they cherish their past while embracing their future.
As part of the Twinning Program, Stony Plain and Shikaoi residents have the opportunity to participate in various exchange programs. These programs provide community members with the opportunity to connect, live, and thrive within the international community.
Over the years, Stony Plain's and Shikaoi's relationship has blossomed.
Alberta-Japan Twinned Municipalities Association (A/J TMA)
The mission of the A/J TMA is to stimulate, co-ordinate, and facilitate twinning opportunities between the Province of Alberta and Japan. With support from the Alberta Government, the Association was founded in 1998 and works with Alberta communities to promote Alberta-Japan relations at the community level.
Shikaoi is a farming community for more than 6,000 residents. It is located forty minutes from Obihiro City on the central island of Hokkaido in Japan. Shikaoi residents can be described as friendly, welcoming, and fun.
