Outdoor Skating Rinks
ALL outdoor rinks are CLOSED until next season.
Weather Parameters for closures:
- Excess snow, attendants will not have enough time to get all rinks cleaned and opened.
- Weather below -20 (without wind chill)
- Rinks will also be closed if the weather is too warm causing the ice to melt and become dangerous.
The rinks being closed means that they will not be cleared as the ice is dangerous to skate on and the shacks will not be opened by attendants.
Why do outdoor rinks close due to cold weather?
The outdoor rinks have a schedule rotating from public skating to shinny. Rinks staff facilitate changeovers, supervise hockey rinks, put out and take down nets, clean and flood the ice, and clean change facilities. The Town of Stony Plain has a working in cold weather policy from our safety department stating outdoor rinks staff cannot work in weather conditions below -25 degrees. If residents choose to use the rinks in these conditions, they must be aware rinks will be unsupervised and change rooms will be closed.
Why do the ponds stay open during cold weather?
The ponds are open because rinks staff do not need to supervise them.
Why do the change rooms not stay open during cold weather?
The heated change rooms cannot stay open when rinks are unsupervised because they would be vandalized.
