The Holiday Season hasn’t officially begun until the annual Town of Stony Plain’s Christmas Light up! The downtown comes alive November 16th with the lighting of the Town's Christmas tree. The evening kicks off at 6:30 with the lighting of the tree shortly thereafter.
Mayor William Choy says, “The heartwarming event supports community development and neighbourhood relationships, supporting the Town’s flourishing downtown community by providing businesses with the opportunity to connect with residents.” Choy goes on to say, “It really is a special evening! Every year, residents of all ages gather in the downtown. Not only is the tree spectacular, but seeing the community come together to celebrate, is truly wonderful.”
New this year is a Christmas Treat and Treasure Hunt along with a Christmas Decorating Contest. Downtown Businesses are signing up to provide festival goers with either a treat or treasure. All you have to do is download the Treat and Treasure Hunt Map from www.stonyplain.com/LightUp, cut it out of the Stony Plain Reporter in the November 10th edition, or pick one up at the event. Residents will explore our downtown businesses while collecting their treats and treasure. Businesses are also encouraged to decorate the outside of their store fronts. They will be judged at the end of the night by Town staff. The winner of the Christmas Decorating Contest will be announced live on 88.1 FM The One who will also be live on location.
Tevra Graham, Community Services Coordinator says, “Downtown Business owners are really excited about this new edition to Christmas Light Up. Of course the lighting of the tree and pictures with Santa will always be the highlight of the evening but having the businesses more involved this year is going to make this already very popular event even better.”
The evening is FREE, but please remember to bring a toy or a non-perishable food item for the Kinsmen Christmas Hampers.
Children between the ages of 5 and 11 can once again enter our colouring contest for a chance to win a cash prize and be the first to have their picture taken with Santa. The colouring sheet can also be downloaded from www.stonyplain.com/LightUp. Deadline for this contest is November 10th.
