During their Regular Meeting on September 10, Town of Stony Plain Council accepted an update on the Downtown Library Expansion project for information. The new Library will be located on the 14,800 sqft main floor of a 7 story building, which will also house a multi residential seniors’ development.
The developer has begun work on the foundation of the building and estimates show suites will be available for viewing in September of 2019. The Library grand opening is slated for late fall 2019.
In March of this year, it was announced the Town of Stony Plain would receive $250,000 in funding from the Government of Alberta’s Coal Community Transition Fund to be allocated towards the Downtown Library Expansion project. The Stony Plain Public Library is also actively pursuing additional funding to assist with the development of the library building. Administration is currently working with a construction committee from the Stony Plain Public Library on a conceptual design for the new library space.
“Having the Library in this new location will have great benefits for our community,” say Mayor William Choy. “It will stimulate and diversify our already vibrant business sector, increase the amount of visitors to the downtown core, and potentially bolster tourism in Stony Plain. Council is pleased to see this exciting project moving through initial phases, and we’re eager to watch it progress.”
“The Library is a beloved gathering space in our community, but the current location is significantly smaller than it should be according to Provincial standards,” says Allison Stewart, Director of the Stony Plain Public Library. “A new, bigger location for the Library has been something we dreamed of for some time, so seeing the project come to fruition and undergo these first tangible steps is incredible. The new and improved downtown location will allow us to continue to meet the growing needs of our thriving town.”
