4:35 PM Update #13 ATCO has completed repairs and all roads and intersections are open. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
7:30 PM Update #12 ATCO has completed 900 relights. If you are still having trouble with your furnace or gas appliances please call ATCO’s 24 hour line at 1-800-511-3447.
1:20 PM Update #11 ATCO has closed the intersection north of Highway 628 at Westerra Drive/High Park Road for repairs. Sidewalk closed signs are in place, and pedestrian traffic heading south will be rerouted behind the reservoir/tennis courts with crossing permitted on the east side of the intersection. Utilities have been located and ATCO is now digging. ATCO has taken over the road closure portion and has not yet provided a timeline for when it is expected to reopen. The Principal of High Park School has been in touch with Parkland Transportation in order to have busses access the school via Golf Course Road.
7:45 AM Update #10
Gas was restored as of 3:55 AM. Most newer homes’ furnaces should of kicked back on automatically. ATCO staff will be going door to door this morning for the older homes. If your furnace is not on call ATCO’s emergency line at 1-800-511-3447.
Both schools have been confirmed to have heat. There should be no interruption to class but please check your school’s website and Facebook pages.
The High Park entrance at Hwy 628 is also open now. A steel plate has been installed to cover the hole. Crews will return later this morning to make further repairs.
Once again thank you for your patience. Updates will continue through the day.
10:50 PM Update #9
ATCO has just updated the Town of Stony Plain. They are bringing in extra crews and will be working through the night to repair the damage. They hope to have customers back on line by morning. Temporary natural gas bottle trailers are being requested to connect High Park and Memorial Composite High schools. Thank you to all the men and women working hard tonight to fix this issue and thank you to all the residents who may have to throw on extra blankets. We appreciate your patience. Further updates will resume tomorrow morning.
9:15 PM Update #8
Hwy 628 (also known as 79th Ave) between Golf Course Road and Willow Way has now been reopened. The Westerra entrance at Hwy 628 has also been reopened. However, the High Park entrance will remain closed until the line is repaired. Steel plates will cover the hole until a proper road repair can be made.
8:30 PM Update #7
1200 Stony Plain residents are without gas this evening while ATCO crews are working to repair the line. Once the repairs are done, and the gas is turned back on, the majority of these homes’ furnaces will kick back on automatically as most newer homes have an auto relight. For older homes that do not, ATCO service people will go door to door with relighting. Depending on the time of the repair, this will happen either tonight or early tomorrow morning. If residents wake up in the morning and there’s no heat, they can call ATCO’s emergency line at 1-800-511-3447.
7:20 PM Update #6
The venting is now complete and ATCO has started digging. They are getting close to the line and suspect it was a dead end stub line that was hit. ATCO is hoping to just cap it off. If so, repairs are expected to be relatively swift. A large number of residents are without gas, if the repair goes quick, they may be able to turn gas back on without having to go door to door to reset regulators. If relighting is needed, ATCO employees with ID will knock on your door. They will try to get as many as they can done tonight and will return in the morning to do the rest. When ATCO isolates the valves, they know which areas are without gas, therefore know which houses will need relighting. More information will be known in about an hour. Road closures are still in effect, please avoid the area. Those who were evacuated have since been allowed back into their homes.
6:00 PM Update #5
Residents will start noticing, if you haven’t already, a gas disruption as the gas lines continue to vent. Once all the venting is complete it will be safe for ATCO to start repairing the lines. Until the full extent of the damage has been determined, it is unclear how many houses and regions will be effected. It’s most likely all of High Park, parts of Westerra including the Westerra Manor apartment building, and Willow Park will experience a gas disruption for several hours. Ten houses in High Park have been evacuated. The Stony Plain Fire Department has been monitoring these homes and no levels of gas have been found. These residents will be allowed back in once the venting is complete. After ATCO is successful in repairing the lines they will be going door to door to do relights. Once again, all road closures are still in effect and avoid the area. The Town appreciates your patience. Thank you.
4:50 PM Update #4
Moving students from High Park School has gone well, most are now gone.
ATCO is starting to dig to isolate the break. They have shut valves down in sections of both High Park and Westerra. They are hoping to isolate these valve shut downs to just these regions. However, this zone may have to expand.
Relights will occur when ATCO is finished making the repairs.
The Stony Plain Fire Department will remain on the scene.
All road closures remain in effect. Avoid the area.
3:55 PM Update #3
The Stony Plain Fire Department has given the go ahead for bussing as per usual at both High Park School and Memorial Composite High School. RCMP is in control of traffic in High Park. They are restricting access to bussing and parents only. Road closures are still in effect.
3:20 PM Update #2
Houses in the general area of the gas line have been evacuated. These houses have been checked by the Stony Plain Fire Department and there is no detection of gas build up.
A plan has been developed to allow kids to be bussed out of the schools in the area. RCMP are ensuring the safety of kids walking home. Please refer to your child's school Facebook page or website for details on this.
ATCO is still on the scene, working to shut valves off. Some digging will be required.
Hwy 628 between Golf Course Road and Willow Way will remain closed, along with Westerra Drive and High Park Road for several hours.
Please avoid the area.
2:45 PM Update #1
The Town can now confirm a gas line has been struck at the intersection of Hwy 628 and Westerra Drive/High Park Road. ATCO is on the scene isolating the line. The Stony Plain Fire Department is on the site as a precaution. Also, Stony Plain Municipal Enforcement Officers are directing traffic. The intersection is closed along with High Park Road to Highridge Way, and Westerra Drive to Westerra Blvd. All of Highway 628 from Golf Course Road to Highway 779 is also closed. Houses in the immediate area have been evacuated. Avoid the area. Schools and Parkland Transportation are being notified.
The contractor has had a complication installing the new traffic lights at the intersection of Hwy 628 and Westerra Drive/ High Park Road. Please avoid the area. Peace Officers and the Fire Department are on scene to assist.
