New Operations building to be constructed at Town Golf Course
The Town of Stony Plain is planning to build a new Operations facility at the Stony Plain Public Golf Course.
The new, 9,360 square-foot building will replace the existing facility, which has served as the Course’s maintenance shed since 1985.
“Our community has every reason to be proud of its attractive, award-winning golf course, which attracts golfing enthusiasts from across the province and beyond,” says Ken Lemke, mayor of Stony Plain. “It is very important that we have modern, safe facilities for our employees.
"This facility will enable our staff to maintain the course – now and in the years to come – to the high standards that our citizens and the many golfers who use this championship course expect, deserve and demand.”
The present maintenance shop is poorly insulated, with many physical deficiencies that do not meet Provincial building code and labour standards. Space is extremely limited; many expensive pieces of equipment are exposed to the elements. The building is also poorly located on the site, causing staff to waste significant time traveling to and from the facility.
The new building will be strategically located along the north-west section of the course – adjacent to an industrial area and serviced by a major artery along Golf Course Road. It will align with the Town’s architectural guidelines and complement the designs of the Town Administration building, the Stony Plain Fire Hall and the physical structures that will be developed at Heritage Park.
Funding for the approximately $1.4 million project will be sourced from debenture borrowing. Before Council can approve a bylaw authorizing application for funding for this project, the Town must advertise in the local newspaper for two consecutive weeks (May 6 and 13, 2011 issues of the Reporter).
Doing so not only informs the public about this initiative but also offers citizens the opportunity to ask questions, request additional information and/or express support or opposition for the project.
Construction of the new centre is scheduled to begin this summer and should be completed in 2012.
After the existing maintenance facility is removed, extensive, much-needed improvements can be made to the fifth and sixth holes. The cost to renovate these sections of the course is estimated at $357,000. Work on this project is scheduled to commence in 2012, once funding sources have been identified and approved by Council.
