Stony Plain AB- The Town of Stony Plain is conducting a needs assessment and developing a business plan for a municipal cemetery. Residents are being asked to assist in identifying the level of need based on demographics and other cemetery locations in the region.
Currently, the Town of Stony Plain does not have a municipal cemetery or memorial green space. The Town is currently examining the operational costs as well as the overall interest for a cemetery in our community. The Town is conducting a survey via mail to 3,000 randomly selected households and later hosting an open house and stakeholder workshops to determine the suitability and business case for a municipal cemetery.
“Community input is important for a number of reasons. Many people do not consider questions such as interment type or place until it becomes a necessity, but planning for this type of land use must occur long in advance of need,” says Karl Hill, General Manager of Community and Protective Services. “There are currently no municipal or non-faith-based options for interment within the Town of Stony Plain, whereas the population is increasing and becoming more culturally diverse.”
Residents are encouraged to provide input surrounding the potential allocation of funds toward a municipal cemetery.
“Trends surrounding how cemeteries are designed and used are changing, with growing emphasis on options such as scattering gardens, memorials and green burial. Cemeteries are also being designed more like parks with a spiritual component, offering places to walk, sit, and contemplate within attractive, peaceful surroundings.,” says Mayor Choy. “It is important for residents to weigh in on the need for a cemetery as there are implications in terms of how tax revenue is invested.”
