Sonora Complex fire update - May 10, 2013
The investigation of a massive structural fire that destroyed a 34-/36-unit apartment complex in Stony Plain on Thurs., May 9 is underway and will continue throughout the weekend. Although the cause and origin of the fire have not yet been determined, investigators are interviewing tenants, neighbours and witnesses over the next few days as part of the process. Tenants will be able to return to their units for the first time tomorrow – Sat., May 11. They must first call the building’s property managers at 780.968.0537 to confirm a time.
Residents within the Tri-Municipal Region responded quickly and generously to help those affected by this emergency. In fact, so many items were dropped off at a temporary donation centre – set up at the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion – that the most-pressing needs were met in less than 12 hours.
At this point, no more immediate donations are required; however, many of the now-homeless families require long-term support, and a trust fund has been set up for this cause. Monetary donations to the Sonora Fire Victims' Trust Fund are accepted at any ATB Branch or by front reception of Stony Plain FCSS, located on the 2nd Floor of the Town Office (4905 – 51 Ave.) in Stony Plain during regular office hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday). Please make cheques payable to “Sonora Fire Victims.” Alternatively, donations can be made to Alberta Red Cross at 780.423.2680 or online.
Seven members from Alberta Red Cross will be in town until Monday morning, working with local businesses and community organizations to ensure that victims’ basic and urgent needs are attended to. Following Red Cross’s involvement, Stony Plain and District Victims Services – which has also been working with residents since they were evacuated – will take over.
