Stony Plain Public Outdoor Swimming Pool opens for season
The Stony Plain Public Outdoor Swimming Pool is officially open for the season.
“The Town’s public swimming pool is somewhat of an icon in this community,” says Ken Lemke, mayor of Stony Plain. “As one of the few remaining outdoor pools in this province, this extremely popular and highly successful facility stands as a long-standing testament to the significance and meaning it has for citizens in this town.”
The 2011 season kicked off with a toonie swim on May 13, and the Pool is now accepting registrations for swimming lessons. Approximately 20 employees – certified lifeguards and qualified maintenance personnel – are hired each season to manage, supervise and maintain the full-service facility.
Summer staff take pride in ensuring all swimmers have access to a clean, safe and well-maintained facility and a fun, friendly atmosphere.
Residents and visitors can take advantage of the wide-range of programs offered, including: private and public lessons for all ages and abilities; public swimming sessions; aqua-fit classes; adult lane swims; and many more programs.
A complete event schedule can be picked up at the Pool’s front desk or downloaded from its new website: www.stonyplainpool.com.
The Stony Plain Pool offers the Red Cross Swim Kids’ Program and pre-school lessons for children between ages three and five. The objectives are to teach swimming skills in a safe, structured – but fun – learning environment. Last season, instructors taught lessons to more than 1,200 swimmers in July and August and to more than 750 students from schools in Stony Plain and surrounding areas in May and June.
The facility can be rented for private functions, such as birthday parties, corporate-social events and family reunions.
About The Stony Plain Public Outdoor Swimming Pool
The Stony Plain Public Outdoor Swimming Pool has been making a splash in the community for more than 40 years. Since 1972, Town has operated the outdoor, six-lane pool from mid-May to the end of August each year. The Stony Plain Sharks’ Swim Club (www.stonyplainsharks.com), which operates a successful aquatics program, uses the pool as its base.
By operating the Stony Plain Outdoor Public Swimming Pool, the Town demonstrates its commitment to social equity – by developing and maintaining a community that is focused on creatively meeting the needs of residents through the promotion of equality, wellbeing, safety citizen participation and involvement. Social Equity is one of the four core values of the Community Sustainability Plan, which governs how the Town of Stony Plain conducts business.
