Town of Stony Plain Council has authorized Administration to move forward with the creation of the Mayor’s Task Force on Community and Citizen Development.
The purpose of the Task Force is to provide Council with strategic advice to aid in the creation of policies, tactics, and practices to help promote and encourage volunteerism in Stony Plain.
Many municipalities across Alberta have adopted a similar practice after noticing a shift in the levels of volunteerism within their communities, as well as an apparent change in the amount of citizen knowledge of and engagement with their local government.
“The Task Force’s main goal is to ensure continued community development and instill a strong sense of pride in volunteerism in residents of Stony Plain,” says Town Manager Tom Goulden.
“We’ll ask questions about what Stony Plain’s volunteer community currently looks like, what it should ideally look like in the future, and what steps we can take to achieve that desired outcome.”
The Task Force will be composed of the Mayor, two members of Council, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), and five to eight community representatives of various backgrounds and perspectives. The Task Force will present an initial report of their findings to Council in October of this year. A final report with recommendations will be delivered no later than May 2019.
“I’m very excited about the creation of the Mayor’s Task Force on Community and Citizen Development,” says Stony Plain Mayor William Choy.
“Our community would not be the same without all of our incredible volunteers. They work tirelessly both behind the scenes and on them to ensure our events, festivals, and programs are a success. It’s important we take steps to guarantee the spirit of volunteerism continues to thrive in our town.”
Further information about how residents can either learn more or sign up will be provided shortly via social media and the Town website.
