All good things must come to an end, and Summer Sessions is no different. The free summer concert series will wrap up for another season with a performance from Calgary pop country duo Leaving Thomas. The best friends and musical partners are currently on tour and will make a stop in Stony Plain on August 8.
Bandmates Bryton Udy and Annika Odegard have a long history. They first met fifteen years ago as members of a children’s chorus during a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Years later in 2012, they met again as contestants on the annual Calgary Stampede Talent Search. When they met a third time shortly afterwards, the duo decided it must be fate and partnered their musical talents to form Leaving Thomas. The singer/songwriters draw influence from a variety of genres including pop, soul, country, and R&B. They released their debut single, “Waiting Kind of Girl”, in 2016, and have had the opportunity to record their unique sound in Music City itself.
“It takes the writing to the next level [because] the time you have with writers is short,” says Udy of their Nashville recording experience. Udy added he was impressed with the talent of Nashville writers, including “how quick they can throw down lyrics and know how it will sound when it’s produced.”
“This show will be special for Leaving Thomas as it is the only one in 2018 that will be an entirely acoustic set,” says Culture and Tourism Development Officer Angela Fetch Muzyka. “Bryton assures me this will mean a lot more stories shared with the crowd, and a stripped down sound unlike any performance by the band this year.”
Leaving Thomas takes the stage in Shikaoi Park at 7 p.m. on August 8. Come early to catch the opening act. For more details about Summer Sessions, visit www.stonyplain.com/summersessions. To learn more about Leaving Thomas, head to www.leavingthomas.com.
