The Town of Stony Plain is hosting an open house for those who are curious about or interested in the Shikaoi International Student Exchange Program. The event is on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 from 6 – 9 p.m. in Council Chambers.
This year, more than 50 host families are needed to house nearly 80 students from Shikaoi, Japan. While the exchange program has been successful for 20 years, the majority of the Stony Plain community is unfamiliar with the program and the life-changing experience it can create.
“So far, we have had tremendous support from those involved in the Shikaoi International Student Exchange Program,” says Melanie Samson, Program Manager of Community and Protective Services. “As our delegations continue to grow each year, we too, need to grow. We are hosting an open house in hopes of reaching out to more Stony Plain residents. The open house will provide an opportunity for those who have participated in the program to share their stories and connect with those who may be interested in learning more about the program.”
The open house will include food and beverages, information packages, and a PowerPoint presentation. Select community members, who have previously participated in the exchange program as either host families or delegates, will be sharing their experiences with others.
Stony Plain and the Japanese Twinning Program
The Town of Stony Plain and Shikaoi committed to the Twinning Program in 1985. Since then, five exchange programs have been developed: Student Delegation, Host Family Program, Long Stay Exchange Program, Adult Delegation, and Assisted English Teaching (AET) Program. Exchange programs provide participants with a new perspective on their own culture, exposure to Shikaoi’s culture, and a stronger understanding of the role they play in the international community.
