The Town of Stony Plain’s annual Christmas tree recycling initiative has wrapped up for the season. The Town, in conjunction with FortisAlberta and Davey Tree Expert Company of Canada, Ltd., has operated the post-holiday environmental event for more than 12 years. Fortis donates the equipment, while Davey Tree provides the manpower for the service.
“Christmas tree recycling is an easy and an environmentally-friendly alternative for residents to dispose of their trees,” says William Choy, mayor of Stony Plain. “Each year through this program, we are able to divert hundreds of Christmas trees away from landfills for reuse in our community. We appreciate our partners’ involvement in this program and their shared commitment to environmental responsibility.”
“The homeowners who participate in this program are being environmentally responsible, just as they are when they recycle their plastics, paper and cardboard, “says Kevin Cassells, operations manager – Western Canada residential/commercial division of Davey Tree.
On Jan. 31, 2014, Mayor Choy joined representatives from the two companies to participate in the Town’s annual recycling program.
The Town continues to support Christmas tree recycling, also known as Tree-cycling, providing residents with the opportunity to recycle their trees after the holidays by dropping them off at the Rotary Recycling Centre or the Public Works Compound in January. While residents can access this service for no charge, lights, nails, ornaments, plastic, tinsel and other decorations must first be removed, as these items are not compostable.
Collected trees are chipped into nutrient-rich mulch and composting products. Benefits from recycling these trees include extending the life of the landfill and reusing natural and limited resources. Mulch and compost is nature’s process of recycling decomposed organic materials. Public Works uses the mulched compost in its seasonal maintenance of Town flower beds, parks and green spaces and other turf areas. Through this green initiative, the Town recycles many trees each year. It is part of the Town’s Wipe Out Waste program and its efforts to reach an 80 per cent waste-diversion rate by 2020.
