The Town of Stony Plain wants to improve its practice of public participation - the active involvement of the public to contribute its concerns, needs and ideas on important issues. The Town wants to consider and use this input to inform decision-making.
The Town is creating a Public Participation Strategy and Processes Project, the purpose of which is to provide a framework to engage the public in decision-making. The project involves, but is not limited to, the following:
- Public Participation Strategy: to guide the Town in delivering public participation in a consistent and coordinated approach based on best practices and guiding principles suited to the people, context and organization culture of Stony Plain. The Strategy will help determine when the Town should engage with the public, clarify the link to decision-making, the best and most appropriate approaches to public participation and recommendations for a governance structure to support this important practice.
- State of Engagement Audit: will explore the current state of engagement in the Town, identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges, establish a vision for future meaningful and effective Town engagement and identify the resources and direction needed to support this work over the long-term.
- Engagement Toolbox: that links to the Strategy and builds on best practices, aligning with the realities, context and culture of what will work in Stony Plain. This will include a variety of tools, tips and techniques that will provide the Town with the essentials to be able to plan and implement meaningful and effective public participation projects.
- Capacity Building and Co-Learning: where Town staff are part of the development of this new approach to public participation, ensuring not only that the solutions, ideas and approaches are “made in Stony Plain”, will work and are realistic, but also to learn together, build new skills and have the opportunity to experience and practice the principles of effective engagement
The goal of this improved public participation approach is to strengthen civic health, build trust, promote accountability and increase the commitment of all in how the Town is governed.
As part of this initiative, the Town is conducting a public survey to gather information that will help it understand how residents want to participate with the Town on matters that are important to them.
For this project to be effective - and the research accurate - the survey is open to all residents of Stony Plain; everyone is encouraged to share his or her views. The Town needs your help - please share your experiences, perspectives and ideas.
The Town will use the information collected to inform the Town’s state of engagement audit and to develop the Town’s Public Participation Strategy and Processes.
This strategy will be submitted to Council for review and be completed by early 2014.
The online public survey, which is open from Nov. 12 to 29, 2013, takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Responses remain confidential, and you - or your business or organization - will not be identified in relation to any specific response.
