It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Stony Plain as the annual Christmas Light Up event is approaching! The evening of community spirit and holiday cheer takes place on Thursday, November 15. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m., the lighting of the Town Christmas Tree is at 7:30 p.m., and the evening will wrap up at 9 p.m.
“This cherished event is a local favourite, and many residents look forward to attending each year,” says Mayor William Choy. “It encourages people to gather in celebration of togetherness, the spirit of giving, and the holiday season. It’s also a unique way for residents to meet with local businesses and learn about the products and services they provide.”
Returning for its second year is the Treat and Treasure Hunt. Once again, downtown businesses will sign up to provide attendees with a festive treat or treasure. Residents will explore and visit with businesses while collecting gifts along the way. To join the fun, download the Treat and Treasure Hunt Map at www.stonyplain.com/lightup, clip it out of the November 9th edition of the Stony Plain Reporter, or pick one up at the Christmas Light Up event.
Downtown businesses are encouraged to participate in the Christmas Decorating Contest, also it in its second year, by decorating their storefronts in holiday splendor. Participants will be judged by Town of Stony Plain Administration. The winner will be announced live on location by 88.1 “The One” FM.
Finally, children between the ages of 5 and 11 are once again invited to enter the Christmas Colouring Contest for a chance to win a cash prize and be the first to have their picture taken with Santa at Christmas Light Up. The colouring sheet is available for download at www.stonyplain.com/lightup. The entry deadline is November 9th.
“Christmas Light Up is truly a magical evening,” says Community Services Coordinator Tevra Graham. “There is something very special about gathering with friends, family, and neighbours and counting down to the lighting of our big, beautiful Town tree. We hope to see residents of all ages join us in celebration.”
The Christmas Light Up is a free event, but please remember to bring a non-perishable donation for the Kinsmen Christmas Hampers.
