Council heard an update on the Veterans Boulevard construction project during the Regular Council Meeting on May 14. The presentation included background information on the project, a recap of existing work completed to date, and a proposed schedule for the current construction season.
The contract for improvements to Veterans Blvd (formerly Boundary Road) from Highway 16A to Highway 628 was awarded to Wells Construction in the fall of 2016. Council approved a project budget of $16.1 million for this two-year project, which began in 2017 and is scheduled for completion in 2018.
By the end of the 2017 construction season, tree removal and site clearing had been completed, land acquisitions had been negotiated, and major gas and power lines conflicting with roadway improvements had been relocated. That year, road reconstruction efforts focused on Veterans Blvd from Fairways Drive north to Highway 16A.
By the end of 2017, the northern entry (Highway 16A to 44th Avenue) had been reopened while the CN Railway crossing remained closed and partially completed. The reconstructed 4-lane road base south of the railway crossing has been largely completed to Fairways Drive, and the ditches further south to Highway 628 have been graded.
Wells Construction has submitted a schedule with an expected project completion, including landscaping, in 2018. The prime contractor arrived on site the week of May 7th, and anticipates opening Veterans Blvd from Highway 16A to Fairways Drive by mid-to-late July.
“As is always the case, construction progression is weather dependent. We hope it continues to cooperate so this project can move along according to schedule,” says Paul Hanlan, General Manager of Planning and Infrastructure.
“The unexpected twinning of the CN Railway will also play a role as it has the potential to delay the reopening of the roadway. We will continue to work with CN in an effort to see this project unfold as smoothly as possible.”
