Municipal Development Plan
The MDP is the Town’s highest-level document, establishing a clear vision for Stony Plain, and is the road-map for the community for the next 20 to 30 years.
That vision was determined in large part through public consultation with the people of Stony Plain in order to ensure the MDP accurately reflects the needs and desires of residents, business owners and other stakeholders.
The MDP outlines policies to accommodate growth while balancing land use priorities with cultural, social, environmental and economic considerations. OUR VISION
Implementation of the MDP began in March 2014.

Uniquely Stony Plain: Municipal Development Plan 2013
Why an MDP?
The MDP is the primary document that guides the future development and growth of the whole community. The MDP sets the vision on how to accommodate this growth responsibly and serves as an important decision-making tool for Council, administration and all stakeholders.
As a statutory plan required by the Alberta Municipal Government Act, the MDP provides direction for Council, administration, developers and builders, property-owners, residents and adjacent municipalities. Furthermore, it abides by the polices and plans established by the Capital Region Board (CRB) to ensure consistency with the long-term regional interests in the CRB Growth Plan.
For municipalities with a population greater than 3 500, an MDP is a mandatory requirement under the MGA and must be adopted by Council through a bylaw and be consistent with provincial Land Use Policies.
An MDP addresses several issues, including:
- future land use;
- future development;
- transportation; and
- municipal services.
