Grounds and FacilitiesPublic Works crews take great pride in caring for the Town's green spaces, in order to preserve the natural beauty and cleanliness of the community.
Public Works maintains the Glenn Hall Centennial Arena as well as all playgrounds, which are inspected regularly. Required repairs are completed in a timely manner.
This division also maintains all Town parks, Town-owned recreational facilities, sports fields, trails and turf areas.
This includes planting, maintaining and watering of trees, plants, flower beds, hanging baskets and planters; mowing, trimming, weeding and landscaping parks, sports fields and the Town's 400 acres of turf areas; repairing damaged playground or park equipment; maintaining parks and green space irrigation systems; and preparing sports fields for user groups.
Public Works also is responsible for tree maintenance: removing, planting, pruning, stumping and trimming trees on public property. It is the Town's responsibility to maintain trees located on Town boulevards. The Town conducts formal inspections of all boulevard trees, which generates a list of pruning, removal and planting.
Property owners are responsible to maintain the boulevard(s) and lane(s) adjacent to their properties. This includes watering, weeding, mowing grasses and keeping lanes free of litter. The Town encourages property owners and residents to maintain the lanes and boulevards to keep our community clean - for the enjoyment of all.
The Town operates an extensive weed control program to control weeds and grasses that may impair traffic visibility, damage road asphalt surfaces, cause safety issues for pedestrians and for aesthetic purposes. The Town controls weeds with mechanical trimming, which includes roadside tractor mowing, weed line trimming and a weed program.
Weed control helps to mimimize the collection of litter and debris in weed-infested areas. Another objective is to support the Alberta Weed Control Act to manage noxious weeds.
In winter, Public Works staff ensures that snow and ice is removed from in front of Town buildings and facilities, outdoor rinks and trails (in accordance with the Town's winter maintenance plan and priorities).
