Streets and Sidewalks
Public Works is responsible for the maintenance of all Town streets and sidewalks. The division strives to ensure public safety by maintaining the condition of roads and sidewalks through cost-effective maintenance, long-term planning and prioritizing, fiscal responsibility, quality performance and prompt service.
- Complete resurfacing of municipal roads
- Asphalt / pavement repairs to roads, curbs and shoulders
- Filling potholes
- Removing obstacles (e.g. - shrubs, litter) blocking line-of-sight at intersections
- Sweeping and flushing of curbed streets and sidewalks within neighbourhoods and on main roads
- Repair and replacement of sidewalks
- Ditch and shoulder maintenance
- Installation and maintenance of culverts
- Vegetation control along roads and sidewalks
- Dust control along streets
- Curb and gutter repairs / replacement
- Winter control operations, which includes plowing and sanding of all Town roads
- Snow and ice removal from roads and sidewalks
Note: As Hwy. 779 (48 Street) and Hwy. 628 (79 Avenue) are Provincial highways, the responsibility for maintaining these streets belongs to Alberta Transportation.
Asphalt repair priorities are based upon the severity of the problem. Visual inspections are completed regularly, and problem areas are ranked according to severity. Town crews repair potholes and paint crosswalks as required. An annual tendering process is conducted for the Town's Crack Sealing and Pavement Marking Programs.
Pothole and minor maintenance patching is performed by Public Works crews. Larger service patches, road paving and overlays are completed by contractors, which are awarded projects through a competitive tendering process, in accordance with the Town's Purchasing Policy.
Every spring, Public Works crews clean Town streets and boulevards on a priority basis. Signs are installed in residential subdivisions in advance, to advise residents that the Town plans to sweep in the neighbourhood within the next 24 hours and to notify citizens to remove vehicles, trailers and other objects from the street. This allows crews to carry out the work more efficiently and produces cleaner overall results. Streets within subdivisions are swept after the completion of business areas and priority routes.
2017 Spring street sweeping begins on May 25. View the street sweeping schedule here.Sidewalks
The Town is responsible for the maintenance of all sidewalks and pedestrian walkways in Stony Plain. Each spring, Public Works crews conduct a formal inspection of all sidewalks to identify deficiencies. These deficiencies are prioritized, and the highest priority deficiencies are repaired with funds provided in the annual budget approved by Council.
The Town uses a variety of strategies to repair sidewalks, including grinding, patching, mudjacking and removing/replacing sections of sidewalk. Sidewalks are repaired annually by contractors, determined through a tendering process under the Town's Concrete Replacement Program and are repaired according to the level of damage; the greater the damage, the higher the priority.
During the spring thaw, most Town roads become too soft to withstand the weight of a fully loaded truck, no matter how many axles it has. In order to reduce damage to Town streets, the Town places weight restrictions/road bans in effect within the Town limits, from approximately March 15 to June 1 each year. Please assist the Town in reducing repairs to our street system by not having heavy deliveries to your property during this time of the year. For more information, contact Public Works at 780.963.2469 or a Community Peace Officer (Municipal Enforcement Services) at 780.963.2151.
Seasonal road bans will be in effect from March 19 until approximately June 1, 2018. Residents in the following areas will receive front curb collection during this time:
- West of 48th Street and South of the CN Tracks
- St. Andrews
- Meridian Heights
