The Town of Stony Plain requires every person carrying on, maintaining, owning or operating within the town any profession, business, trade or occupation - including all sub-trades and non-profit organizations, to hold a valid business licence, as regulated under the Town's Business Licence Bylaw (-5.18MB).
The Business Licence must be visibly displayed on the premises. Licences are valid for one year from the date of commencement of the business.
Business-owners and -operators who hold a valid resident business licence in Stony Plain may be eligible for a Tri-Municipal Business Licence. This licence allows holders to conduct their business in Spruce Grove and Parkland County, without having to buy non-resident licences to operate in those communities.
Licence holders operating a mobile business must carry the licence on his or her person while working in Stony Plain.
Depending on the business type, additional municipal, provincial and/or federal permits and/or licences may be required - such as a Town of Stony Plain development permit or building permit; health approval from Alberta Health Services; or a provincial licence from the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC). It is the responsibility of the business owner to investigate and obtain all required licences and permits.
A development permit may be required if you operate a home-based business or if you wish to change the use of a business space. We suggest you do not sign a lease or begin interior alterations until you receive a valid development permit.
