Downtown Redevelopment Project
The Town of Stony Plain is Revitalizing the Downtown Core!
Stony Plain’s downtown is the core of the Town, where residents and visitors can shop, live, work, and play.
The Downtown Redevelopment project, which is planned for completion in 2020, aims to build on the existing small-town feel in historic downtown for residents, businesses, and visitors.
As part of the ten-year Capital Improvement Plan, the Town of Stony Plain will be improving water and sewer infrastructure along 50th Street.
The Town has decided to enhance the downtown core at the same time by:
- Replacing aging infrastructure
- Enhancing the pedestrian environment
- Establishing bicycle route linkages
- Improving paving and sidewalks
- Developing traffic-calming features
- Creating spaces for cultural events and integrating new public art
Phase 1 will start at the end of spring or early summer (as weather permits) and begin behind businesses on 50th Street:
- Laneways will be converted to one-way lanes to make room for new multipurpose trails.
- Paved line markings and overhead lighting will be added to the improved laneways.
The Town will continue to keep residents and businesses up-to-date throughout all phases of the project. Construction updates will be posted below.
11/14/2017: All alleyways on both sides of Main Street (between 50 and 52 Avenue) are paved and reopened to the public.
10/13/2017:All alleyways on both sides of Main Street are paved – or will be paved by October 16th – and reopened to the public immediately upon paving completion of the final block. Remaining concrete placement and finishing of aprons and sidewalk panels will be completed before the end of October.
06/09/2017: The alleyway from 50 to 52 Avenue (west) is paved and open to the public. Also, the alleyway behind the Post Office and Birdsell Grant LLP is paved and open to the public. The alleyway from 52 to 53 Avenue (west) is closed. Asphalt stamping will begin tentatively on September 21 and be completed by October 7.
14/07/2017:The Town of Stony Plain can now confirm a start date on Phase I of the Downtown Redevelopment Plan. Weather permitting, construction will begin on the laneways of 50th Street on July 24th. Crews will begin enhancing the west back alleys between 50th Avenue and 52nd Avenue first. The contractor will be working on two laneways simultaneously and then move counter clockwise.A letter will be hand delivered with more details to each business along Main Street over the coming days. Vehicle access at the rear of your property will not be available for the duration of the alley re-construction which will be approximately 3 weeks weather permitting. Please follow construction signage that will be in place in order to allow for the construction to progress safely and in a timely manner. The Town also asks for the public to please keep your distance from the equipment. The safety of Stony Plain residents and construction crews is the Town's top priority. Thank you.
23/06/2017:Phase I has been delayed due to unforeseen utility relocation issues. The Town of Stony Plain is working diligently with Fortis Alberta to move ahead. Fortis Alberta needs to complete its utility work before the contractors can move forward with enhancing the lane ways on either side of 50th street. It is the Town’s hope to get the project started by mid-July.
02/06/2017: Construction will begin in mid- to late- June.
25/04/2017: Construction of rear lanes is estimated to start at the beginning of June; however, this is weather dependent. Construction will start in the northwest corner of downtown Stony Plain (behind the MLA's office) and move counterclockwise. Businesses will receive ample notice prior to construction activities commencing.
Waste Survey for Businesses
Due to liability concerns, waste bins will no longer be permitted on the Town's laneways. Waste receptacles will only be permitted on business-owned property.
