Family and Community Support Services
Who we are... Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is a municipal/provincial program that enables Alberta Communities to plan and take part in activities or services that strengthen the family and community. The FCSS program is a cost sharing partnership between the province and the municipality, enabling the municipality to provide services for its residents. The program has been in some municipalities for 35 years. The Stony Plain program is in its 15th year.
People who are involved in the program often think of it in other terms: a way for local people to influence things that affect them; a chance for communities to be innovative and creative; a vehicle to encourage citizen participation, self-help and volunteerism; and as a way to support human growth and development.
What we do... FCSS programs promote volunteerism and are preventive in order to:
- Support and strengthen family and community life
- Help people to identify and act on their own needs
- Help avert family or community social breakdown
- Provide:
- Pamphlet library and information on community activities and resources
- Counselling referral service
- support and assistance for volunteers
- Assistance in developing an idea for a program into reality
- Funding for community projects
- Programs on parenting, seniors issues, youth lifeskills, self-development, couples communication, etc.
Where we are....FCSS programs operate in most Alberta communities. Locally, there are programs in Stony Plain and Spruce Grove. Under a new agreement (between the Town of Stony Plain & Parkland County) county residents now have guaranteed access to preventative social services and programs for the first time. Programs vary as they are based on the identified needs in each community.
Why we are....An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. FCSS is a cost-effective community-based program that involves residents in responding to social needs. Our goal is to prevent small problems from turning into larger, costlier problems
