The Town is currently accepting applications for the next Town of Stony Plain Poet Laureate. The successful candidate will serve as the Town Poet Laureate from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2023.

The Town Poet Laureate serves the community as a cultural and literary ambassador, participating in local events and creating original works that reflect life in the community. The Poet Laureate is a champion of poetry in Stony Plain. Within this role, poets will engage with residents through public events and community projects. The Poet Laureate’s work should speak to their unique poetic style while simultaneously capturing life in Stony Plain.

“While the Town’s Poet Laureate program is still new, we have already seen the positive impacts having a Poet Laureate has on local arts and culture,” says Culture & Tourism Development Officer Chantelle Laberge. “The Town Poet Laureate breathes life into our community and creates opportunities for residents to engage with poetry as a form of creative expression.”

In 2019, Stony Plain welcomed its first Poet Laureate, Lisa Mulrooney. During her time as Poet Laureate, Mulrooney was an active supporter of arts and culture in the community. Her work included daily haikus, painted sidewalk haikus outside Town Office, a video series titled Poetry in Our Town, and her legacy project, Moments: An Assortment of Contemporary Haiku.

Poet Laureate’s must be over the age of 18 and be a resident of Stony Plain. Interested candidates can learn more and apply for the role by visiting the Town website. Applications will close May 28, 2021 at 4:30PM.
