Regional Recreation Centre Approved for Design

Posted On Tuesday April 27, 2021

The development of a Regional Recreation Centre in Stony Plain is moving forward. Council has approved proceeding to the detailed design of a recreational facility to be located at the Glenn Hall Arena site in Old Town South. The design will focus on a capital project budget of $15,000,000.

The development of a recreational facility is a strategic priority of Council. In 2019, facility conceptual designs were created and public engagement sessions with community stakeholders held to further refine conceptual designs. Work on the design continued through 2020 and the first quarter of 2021. The proposed facility aims to provide residents with the greatest diversity of program opportunity while remaining financially achievable.

“Having a recreation centre in our community will encourage growth and development while simultaneously meeting our own resident needs,” says Mayor William Choy. “This is an incredibly exciting project for Stony Plain, and I am looking forward to seeing it come together in the years ahead.”

The facility design will include a gym floor to accommodate racquet and sport courts (volleyball, basketball), multipurpose community space (arts, yoga, dance/performance), fitness (weights, cardio equipment), and a track. Administration will also be exploring the feasibility to cover the outdoor pool during this design work.

“Recreation facilities play an important role in strengthening a community’s social fabric. They are an important community hub that offer sport development, community programs, and networking engagement,” says Karl Hill, General Manager of Community and Protective Services. “This facility will complement the existing inventory of facilities in the region that continue to meet our residents’ needs.”

Administration will provide regular updates to Council as work moves forward. Design work is projected to be completed in mid-2022. Learn more about the Regional Recreation Centre for our community on the Parks, Trails and Recreation page of the Town website.
