Stony Plain FCSS Launches Dementia Connections Project

Posted On Wednesday August 19, 2020

This week, building on the Stony Plain Together We Shine Inclusion strategy, Stony Plain Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is launching the Dementia Connections Project. The goal is to create and maintain inclusive and welcoming dementia-friendly environments within the Tri Region by bringing together Community Champion Connector volunteers with people living with dementia and their carepartners for social engagement opportunities from September 2020 to December 2020. This project will address the issues of dementia, ageism, and isolation.

“We will engage Community Champion Connector volunteers to connect with residents living with dementia to build lasting relationships, offer assistance to navigate resources and attend community events together,” states Community Development Officer, Deanna Butz. “The Dementia Connections Project is meant to create community that is supportive and accepting, where people living with dementia feel safe and welcome.
Greater opportunities for social engagement will ultimately increase their quality of life.”

This project is part of phase two of the Dementia Friendly Community project led by the Tri-Regional Dementia
Collaborative - a regional partnership including Stony Plain FCSS, Primary Care Network, WestView Health
Services, and community members. Phase one consisted of expanding the communities’ awareness and
incorporating new strategies to create a friendly environment for people living with dementia. Phase two of the
project will aim to increase awareness, provide information, and develop strategies with the community to
create and maintain inclusive and welcoming dementia friendly environments.

Residents of Stony Plain, Parkland County and Spruce Grove who are living with dementia, and looking for
positive connections and social opportunities in a dementia friendly setting, are asked to call Stony Plain FCSS
