How many questions were asked on the 2019 census?

The 2019 Municipal Census asked five questions; number of residents, age, gender, where they work and dwelling type.

How is census data used?
Census data is used to award many federal and provincial grants and help the Town of Stony Plain better understand the community. The census helps identify needs for community services such as the location of new schools, policing, fire and library services, recreational and senior facilities. 

What is a census? 

A census is a count of the number of people living in Stony Plain. Census population detail helps the Town improve services for residents. 

Is my data secure?

Yes, data security is built into the census system. Security protocols are in place and your name is not connected with any data. 

Who should fill out the census? 

One person per household over the age of 18 should complete the census. 

Who should be counted? 

  • Persons who usually live in this dwelling including those temporarily away on vacation, business or at a college or university.
  • Landed immigrants, who have been granted the right to live in Canada permanently by Canadian immigration authorities.
  • Persons from another country with a work or study permit and family members living here with them.
  • Persons in Canada who claim refugee status and family members living here with them.
  • Babies born before May 1, 2019.
  • Persons deceased on or after May 1, 2019.  
What is the current and past population?

The current population of the Town of Stony Plain is 17,842. We record the number of people living in our community through a yearly census so that we can make decisions about our needs. The Federal Government also gives funding based on our population. Commercial businesses or manufacturers use this information to decide if Stony Plain is a good investment opportunity.
