STONY PLAIN, AB: The Town of Stony Plain is actively working to improve inclusivity and create a more welcoming community through the Together We Shine initiative. The focus of this year’s campaign is promoting awareness of and celebrating persons with disabilities.

Efforts to promote inclusion and diversity within Stony Plain have been ongoing. The 2019 Community Report on Inclusion and Diversity sparked new ideas for community building at the municipal level. The Together We Shine initiative was established as a key priority for the Town with its inclusion in the Corporate Plan 2022-2024.

Mayor William Choy says, “We are very excited to see inclusion initiatives in action. Embracing inclusivity in Stony Plain brings social, cultural, and economic benefits. It enhances safety, unity, and helps attract and retain visitors and newcomers to our community."

"Creating a more inclusive community where everyone is supported is a priority for the town. We're working to achieve this through our Together We Shine initiative," says Community Development Officer Deanna Butz. "Celebrating inclusion and diversity creates stronger, more connected communities with opportunities for everyone to thrive! The upcoming event is a great opportunity to make space for people living with disabilities in our community and bring everyone together for learning and connection."

The observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. The event will take place December 3 at the Westland Mall in Spruce Grove from 1 PM to 4 PM. The event will feature a market showcasing businesses owned by individuals with disabilities, performances, and a fashion show featuring clothing from GoodWill in collaboration with CommunityAIM and various other organizations.
