Stony Plain has officially been placed on a ‘Watch’ by Alberta Health Services (AHS) with 11 active cases (as of October 26) reported in the community, activating the Temporary Mandatory Face Coverings Bylaw 2638/H/20.

Masks are now mandatory in all indoor, enclosed public spaces as well as within public vehicles with the following exemptions:

  • Persons under the age of 10;
  • Persons unable to place, use, or remove a mask without assistance;
  • Persons unable to wear a face mask due to mental or physical concern or limitation;
  • Persons consuming food or drink in designated seating areas or as part of a religious or spiritual ceremony;
  • Persons engaged in water activities or physical exercise;
  • Persons providing care or assistance to a person with a disability where a face covering would hinder that service; and
  • Persons engaging in services that require the temporary removal of a face covering.

“At present, there are 11 active cases in Stony Plain. We want to remind residents to keep following physical distancing guidelines and support one another during this uncertain time,” says General Manager of Community and Protective Services, Karl Hill. “We know people are getting tired of the constant updates and changes to health protocols, but we must stay vigilant in keeping up with physical distancing and doing what we can to reduce the risk of transmission.”

“Stony Plain has always been a strong and connected community, and we need to channel that spirit now more than ever before,” says Mayor William Choy. “Our residents have done a great job taking care of themselves and their neighbours, and I encourage everyone to be proactive, keep your circles small, and do your part in preventing the spread.”

In addition to wearing a mask, residents are encouraged to follow additional voluntary measures outlined by the Government of Alberta for the 'Edmonton Zone':

  • Cohorts should be limited to no more than three: your core household, your school, and one other sport or social cohort. Young children who attend childcare could be part of four cohorts, given that childcare settings have not been a high risk for spread.
  • Family and social gatherings should be kept to a maximum of 15 people.
  • Wear a mask in all indoor work settings, except when alone in a workspace like an office or cubicle where you are safely distanced from others, or an appropriate barrier is in place.

All residents are asked to continue following the public health orders in place by maintaining physical distancing guidelines, wash hands and/or sanitize hands regularly, and avoid touching their face.
