With the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on the community, the need for social cohesion and resiliency has never been more important. The newly formed Mayor’s Task Force on COVID-19 – Social Stream has been established to prioritize the wellness of the community during this time of uncertainty.

“We know this is a challenging time for everyone, and we are actively searching for ways to alleviate stress and provide resources to maintain quality of life for residents,” says Mayor William Choy. “COVID-19 has shaken our community, but by working together, I am confident Stony Plain can overcome these challenges and prepare for the future.”

In addition to examining social supports, the Task Force is tapping into Stony Plain’s community spirit and launching the #StonyPlainTogether campaign to bring residents closer. Residents are invited to share messages of positivity with their neighbours and wider community through ‘Signs of Hope’.

Councillor Justin Laurie, Chair of the Task Force, says, “Whether it be a poster, window painting, chalk art, or music video, these symbols will capture Stony Plain’s spirit and foster positivity throughout the community. We hope this campaign and the Signs of Hope will bring our residents together despite physical distancing and help people feel less isolated.”

The Task Force is guided by a mission to provide leadership, connect and coordinate with partners, and develop initiatives to enhance the social, emotional, and physical wellbeing of all residents. The team includes Councillor Justin Laurie as Chair, three community members, representation from Stony Plain FCSS, and Mayor Choy and Town Manager Tom Goulden as Ex-Officio members. The Task Force will work together to develop strategies for promoting social wellness and mental health in the community.

The Mayor’s Task Force on COVID-19 – Social Stream meets twice a week to discuss programs and resources available to residents and examine strategies for building community resiliency. Councillor Laurie will report to Council as a standing item on the Town Council Meeting Agenda. A final presentation including all members will be made to Council in the months ahead to summarize key actions and findings.
