STONY PLAIN, AB: A tragic fire late last night in Stony Plain’s Meridian Heights neighbourhood is under investigation. The Stony Plain Fire Department responded to the detached garage fire at 11:30 PM.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered the body of a deceased male in the garage. The Parkland RCMP has since taken control of the scene for further investigation.

Fire Chief Trevor Mistal reported that the garage was fully involved upon his arrival, "We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family affected," said Fire Chief Mistal. "We are working closely with the RCMP to understand the cause of this tragedy."

Mayor William Choy also expressed his sympathies, stating, "Our community is shaken by this devastating event, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time, especially just days before the holiday season. We thank our first responders for their quick action and commitment to our community’s safety."

The fire was brought under control quickly, with minimal damage to neighbouring properties. The Spruce Grove Fire Department was also called in for backup support during the operations.

Due to the nature of this fire, no further information will be provided by the Town of Stony Plain until the investigation is complete.
