WHEREAS the Government of Canada has designated September 30 as the annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call to Action #80, to mark the tragic history and harm caused by the legacy of residential schools; and

WHEREAS this day commemorates and honours the children who never returned home, and acknowledges the resilience, dignity and strength of survivors and intergenerational survivors, families, and communities; and

WHEREAS the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action provide important guidance to all individuals and governments to redress the legacy of residential schools and advance reconciliation; and

WHEREAS the Town of Stony Plain is dedicated to implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action relating to municipalities; and

WHEREAS the Town of Stony Plain is committed to advancing reconciliation through relationships based on truth and the recognition of rights, respect, and friendship; and

WHEREAS Mayor and Council urges Stony Plain residents to observe this day with reflection and action to build understanding of our shared history with Indigenous Peoples. By acknowledging the truths of our past, we strengthen our commitment to a future founded on respect, unity, and understanding.

THEREFORE, I, Mayor William Choy of the Town of Stony Plain, do hereby proclaim September 30 as the “National Day of Truth and Reconciliation”.
