“Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape!”
Fire Prevention Week 2019 to kick off October 6
Fire Prevention Week 2019 is coming up and is set to run from October 6 to October 12. This year, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) wants everyone to get involved in fire safety by focusing on all the small but important actions individuals can take during an emergency.
This year’s theme is focused on everyone learning the steps to take during an emergency and what measures can be taken to prepare for a fire at home. With an emphasis on planning and practicing fire safety, some of the key points for residents this year include:
- Planning your escape route
- Testing your smoke alarms
- Choosing an outside meeting place
- Making a regular reminder of your fire escape plan in your home
- Practicing home fire drills
Fire Prevention Week has been observed annually since 1922 and is one of the longest-running public health observances. In commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the event is held every October to educate communities on how they can keep themselves and their families safe.
This year, our local fire department wants families to work together to complete a home fire safety kit. Once families complete the kit, kids can bring their family’s work to the Stony Plain Fire Hall for an entry form to spend the day filling the boots of a Stony Plain firefighter. This activity will need the help of the whole family, so get ready to work together and plan your home fire safety kit!
“Fire Prevention Week is a great time for us as a community to focus on fire safety. It is important that everyone is educated on what to do during an emergency so our community members can keep themselves and their families safe,” says Town of Stony Plain Fire Chief Trevor Mistal, “We are encouraging everyone to get involved this year and help make their homes a safer place.”
