Poet Laureate Lisa Mulrooney addresses Council for the first time at the Governance and Priorities Meeting Monday night. This officially launched her tenure as Stony Plain’s Poet Laureate. Mulrooney is the Town’s first and only the 6th in the province.

“In the poem I recited for Council, I tried to capture something of the spirit of the Town, with an emphasis on how important it is to take the time to think about and preserve our stories,” reflects Lisa Mulrooney.

Mayor William Choy says, “Already Mulrooney has taken on the role of Poet Laureate with gusto; she has challenged herself to write a daily haiku for the duration of her two year term.”

A Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry made up of three phrases characterized by three qualities. Mulrooney chose this poetry style to recognize and honour the relationship between Shikaoi and Stony Plain. Here is a Haiku she wrote from her recent tour of the Stony Plain and Parkland Pioneer Museum:

aging wood creaks;

the weight of Winter’s limping

carries an ache
