STONY PLAIN, AB: The Stony Plain Fire Department (SPFD) is seeking dedicated individuals who are ready to serve their community in a meaningful way as casual firefighters. This role offers the opportunity to be part of a close-knit team while making a significant impact on the safety and well-being of Stony Plain and its surrounding areas. Applications to become a Stony Plain Casual Firefighter will be accepted until October 4.

The SPFD is committed to providing all the necessary training and support, ensuring that every firefighter is equipped with the skills and knowledge required to protect the community. Previous experience is not required; the department offers a comprehensive training program that includes 240 to 260 hours of paid training during the first year, along with ongoing Monday night sessions. This training is designed to meet national certification standards, giving firefighters college-equivalent education and valuable credentials.

“I started my fire services career as a volunteer firefighter,” says Chief Nesbitt. “After becoming friends with several members of the Peace River Fire Department, they encouraged me to attend training to see if I was interested in joining. By the second training night, I was thoroughly engaged and really enjoying the camaraderie. Shortly after, I was accepted as a member of the Peace River Fire/EMS and have since led a twenty-plus-year career in fire services. Becoming a casual firefighter is an opportunity open to anyone, whether you're just starting out at 18 or looking for a new challenge later in life.”

Mayor William Choy added, "The Stony Plain Fire Department has always been a cornerstone of our community. We’re looking for individuals who are not only ready to protect their neighbours but are also eager to become part of a team that values community, service, and excellence."

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, hold a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license, and preferably reside in Stony Plain. Orientation is planned for early December, leading into the recruit training program that will take place on select Monday evenings and weekends from January through September.

This is more than just a role—it's an opportunity to be part of something greater. Join the Stony Plain Fire Department as a casual firefighter and make a lasting impact on the community. Learn more and how you can apply today on the SPFD webpage.
