Small Scale Urban Garden Returns to Stony Plain After Successful First Season
Last year the Town of Stony Plain, in collaboration with MicroHabitat Urban Farming Ltd. and the Stony Plain Golf Course, introduced a small-scale urban garden to the community. This project aimed to bring the principles of urban agriculture closer to home, fostering sustainability and community engagement.
In 2023, two urban agriculture workshops held at the garden introduced residents and gardeners from the town to the principles and operation of urban agriculture and gardening. After a successful first year, the Town is proud to announce that the Town of Stony plain in partnership with MicroHabitat will be hosting two more educational workshops during the upcoming gardening season, continuing the Town’s commitment to empower the community with knowledge on urban agriculture and sustainable food systems.
Residents are invited to join a FREE in-person workshop hosted by MicroHabitat on June 25th from 12 PM to 1 PM at the Stony Plain Golf Course. Participants will delve into the intricacies of small-scale urban agriculture, learn best practices, and celebrate the joys of gardening and urban agriculture. This workshop will clearly define the steps to follow for ideal watering, harvesting, maintenance and fertilization. It will discuss the right things to do on a daily basis as well as those to avoid, for a healthy vegetable garden and optimal harvests. Principles of ecological agriculture are also addressed, in order to obtain a vegetable garden that respects people and the environment.
Later in the season, residents are welcome to join a fully virtual workshop hosted by MicroHabitat. This workshop is scheduled for September 10th from 12 PM to 1 PM and will focus on the vital role of pollinators in urban gardening. Participants will gain valuable insights into the pollination process and discover ways to support these essential creatures.
As part of the ongoing commitment to community welfare, the produce harvested from the small-scale urban garden continues to be donated to the Parkland Food Bank, aligning with the Urban Agriculture Plan.
"The success of our small-scale urban garden demonstrates the power of collaboration and community spirit,” says Mayor William Choy. “Come and enjoy the sun! We can all learn something that will increase sustainable practices and foster a greener, more resilient Stony Plain."
