The demolition of the Sommerville Springs site is now complete. Demolition of the site included the tear down and clean up of 40 structures in the development as well as grading on site.

“We have been working alongside the owner of the development to safely demolish and clean up the site and ensure it no longer poses a threat to the safety of our residents,” says Town Manager Tom Goulden. “This has been a long process we are happy to see wrapped up.”

Demolition of the Sommerville Springs development comes after a multi-year process. Safety issues were first reported in 2017 and after inspection found the development to be a safety concern to the community, a demolition order was to be carried out in November of 2018. A Stay of Order was filed by the owner of the development, which was refused by the Safety Codes Council, and was followed by a Notice of Appeal in April of 2019. After meeting in court, the Town was given the authority to move forward with demolition.

The Town and the ownership group at Sommerville Gate will continue to work together to see the safe development of the remaining site. External consultants have been brought in by the Town to assist with the technical review of structural and geotechnical concerns with current units in the development. Currently, there is no competition schedule set for the Sommerville Gate development.
