After meeting in court for a stay on the demolition order administered to the Sommerville Springs development, the Town is officially at liberty to proceed with the demolition order. A contract has been awarded to Visco Demolition and demolition is expected to begin in the coming weeks with construction continuing until June 30.

The demolition order for Sommerville Springs comes after a multi-year process involving expressed safety concerns— including heightened concern following the Sommerville Springs fire —and a follow-up inspection of the site in July 2018 which led to the Town issuing an Order against the land owner, JJM Holdings Ltd. The Order, issued under Section 49 of the Safety Codes Act and the Alberta Building Code 2014, was appealed in late November of last year. The Town followed the Legal and Municipal Affairs safety codes process and now has the authority to proceed with the demolition.

“This process continues our efforts to limit the liability of the Town and to ensure any future residents in this area will know that their homes are well built and safe for them and their families,” says Town Manager Tom Goulden. “Community members should be aware of increased traffic and activity in the area and follow all safety notices.”

Demolition of the site will involve the tear-down and clean-up of 40 structures in the Sommerville Springs development. The Town will seek recovery of demolition costs through the Safety Codes Act and Municipal Government Act.
