STONY PLAIN, AB: Alberta Culture Days are returning to Stony Plain with a vibrant lineup of events showcasing the community's rich culture. On Friday, September 13, and Saturday, September 21, residents and visitors are invited to explore arts, culture, and heritage through a variety of engaging activities hosted across town.

In partnership with local businesses, Parkland Potters' Guild, Stony Plain & Parkland Pioneer Museum, Stony Plain Public Library, Red Brick Common, and Skydancer Indigenous Cultural Centre, the Town of Stony Plain has organized two weekends packed with opportunities to experience and celebrate the diversity that defines our community.

“Alberta Culture Days is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together and appreciate the unique cultural assets that make Stony Plain such a special place,” says Mayor William Choy. “These events not only highlight our community's creative spirit but also encourage people to connect with our local businesses and organizations.”

The celebration kicks off on Friday, September 13, with the Storytelling Festival at Shikaoi Park, where guests can gather round to honour Indigenous heritage and culture through traditional storytelling, complemented by bannock with jam and tea.

On Saturday, September 21, the festivities continue with a series of events designed to immerse participants in the rich cultural and historical fabric of Stony Plain and the broader region:

  • Tipi Teachings: Elder Phillip Campiou of Driftpile First Nation will guide participants in learning about the traditional significance of the tipi, followed by a campfire gathering.
  • Exhibit Opening Party – Spirit Creatures of Ancient Shorelines: Alberta artist Adele Duguay will unveil her unique collection of artworks at the Red Brick Common Public Art Gallery.
  • Harvest Festival: The Stony Plain and Parkland Pioneer Museum will host an old-fashioned harvest celebration, complete with threshing demonstrations and vintage machinery.
  • Parkland Potters’ Guild Open House: Visitors can explore the Guild’s studio, witness the pottery-making process, and take home a handcrafted bowl.
  • Horse and Wagon Mural Tours: Pre-registered guests can enjoy a guided tour of Stony Plain’s historic murals aboard a horse-drawn wagon.
  • Filipino Canadian Heritage Dance: Experience the vibrant culture of the Filipino community with a dance performance at the Stony Plain Public Library.
  • Taste of Downtown: Sample a variety of local delicacies at participating downtown restaurants and shops.

“Our cultural sector is thriving, and Alberta Culture Days is the perfect time to showcase the incredible work being done by our community partners,” says Chantelle Laberge, Culture & Tourism Development Officer. “We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the creativity, heritage, and diversity that make Stony Plain a welcoming place to live and visit.”
