STONY PLAIN, AB: As part of its innovative approach to tackling the challenges of carbon emissions, rising property taxes, and the ever-increasing cost of living, the Town of Stony Plain is announcing the introduction of the "Sunshine Tax." This pioneering initiative promises to leverage Alberta's abundant sunny days, turning them into a unique resource that benefits the entire community, especially those with south-facing backyards that not only revel in the glory of both sunrise and sunset views but also bask in more daylight hours than their neighbours.

"Properties with south-facing backyards enjoy a premium with extended daylight and the privilege of witnessing both the day's beginning and end in spectacular fashion. It's an incredible advantage that's not fair to everyone else," explained Mayor William Choy. "Collection of this 'Sunshine Tax' will help us ensure the benefits of our town's natural beauty are shared more equitably. This initiative will directly contribute to our green projects, offsetting carbon taxes and mitigating rising costs through innovative environmental stewardship.” Mayor Choy goes on to say, "These breathtaking views add a layer of value to properties and, therefore, a small contribution through the 'Sunshine Tax' seems only fair to ensure equity across the board."

“In an unprecedented twist, the "Sunshine Tax" will not only be calculated based on the number of sunny hours enjoyed by properties but also the quality of sunset and sunrise views from south-facing backyards,” says Town Manager Tom Goulden. “The more vibrant and colourful the sunset, the higher the joy—and slightly higher the tax. However, to ensure a balanced approach to this weather-related taxation, the Town will introduce a "Cloudy Day Credit" system, offering tax rebate on overcast days.”

"In light of escalating costs of living, it's more important than ever to find creative solutions that benefit our community and environment," added Mayor Choy. "The 'Sunshine Tax,' together with the 'Cloudy Day Credit'  represent our commitment to innovation, and sustainability. Plus, who wouldn't want to pay a little more for spectacular sunshine?"

To celebrate the introduction of these groundbreaking initiatives, Stony Plain will host a "Sunny Outlook Festival" on April 1st, featuring renewable energy workshops and sustainable living seminars. The festival is designed to educate, entertain, and engage residents in a discussion about our collective future and the unique ways we can contribute to it.
