In 2016, a community survey indicated the need for cemetery services in Stony Plain. As a result of this public input, the municipal cemetery project is officially entering the first phase of planning and design. A location for the cemetery has been selected and construction is scheduled to begin in 2020.

The designated location for the new cemetery will be on Rosenthal Road, north of the railway tracks. Urban Systems has been hired to prepare a master plan for the cemetery while The Town and consultants work on preliminary design ideas to be presented to Council and the public in January.

“Town administration is currently working with a consultant and is in the early stages of planning and site concepts,” says Manager of Engineering Brett Newstead. “This project is a key initiative for Town Council and its commitment to successfully managing the impacts of growth, while considering future fiscal, social, and environmental implications.”

“It’s important people know their final resting place will be somewhere their loved ones can visit and honour them in peace. The creation of a community cemetery will help families stay closer to those who have moved on,” says Mayor William Choy. “We are looking forward to working with consultants and residents to design a cemetery that best serves and represents our community.”

Following the presentation of the design plans in January, an Open House will be held to engage the community and garner feedback for proposed designs. A community survey will also be deployed to collect more responses from our residents. Stay tuned for updates about the new cemetery posted on our official website and social media channels.
