Town Highlights Importance of Diversity Through Inclusivity Campaign
Together we shine! The Town of Stony Plain is actively working to improve inclusivity and create a more welcoming community.
In 2019, Stony Plain FCSS (now the Community and Social Development department) received funding from the Human Rights Education and Multiculturalism Fund to help focus local efforts to improve inclusivity. In an initial assessment using the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association’s (AUMA) scale, the Town was determined to be in the second stage – out of a total five stages – of inclusion known as “Awareness”. The findings outlined in the Town’s Community Report on Inclusion and Diversity indicates while effort is being made, there is room for improvement.
“We want everyone to feel welcome in our community. Communities that are committed to promoting inclusion experience an increased sense of cohesiveness and belonging. When people feel welcome and are involved in the community, safety and security are enhanced. We want to earn the trust, loyalty, and respect of our municipal employees and our citizens by showing that we take diversity seriously, and are committed to actions that further inclusion for all,” says Community Development Officer Deanna Butz.
“The findings using the AUMA scale of inclusion have been incredibly insightful for the Town. What this measurement does is show us where the gaps are, where we can improve, and how we can create a more inclusive community for all our residents,” says Mayor William Choy. “The Together We Shine initiative is a priority for the Town and Council. As leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure our residents know they are valued members of our community, and that we are actively working to find better ways to support residents.”
A social media campaign is launching this month to promote the importance of inclusion and increase awareness of work being done in the community. The campaign will explore what inclusion looks like in Stony Plain, why it is important, and how residents can get involved. Community members can follow along on the Town of Stony Plain’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages.
