STONY PLAIN, AB: The Town of Stony Plain has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 ATCO Community Energy Fund and will receive a grant of $15,000 to support the installation of two electric vehicle (EV) chargers. These chargers will be located at the Public Works building to support the Town’s fleet and at the Town Office for public use.

The ATCO Community Energy Fund supports innovative projects that help Alberta’s communities transition to renewable energy solutions. Through this fund, grants are provided for a wide range of energy transition initiatives, such as installing EV chargers, solar panels, and LED lighting upgrades. The Town of Stony Plain’s project is part of a larger effort to promote sustainable growth and energy-efficient technologies.

“This grant will help us take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future,” says Mayor William Choy. “By installing EV chargers, we are encouraging our residents to embrace eco-friendly transportation and making it easier for our community to participate in the shift toward greener energy solutions.”

“We currently have two fully electric vehicles in our fleet, and these chargers will help us improve efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” says Miles Dibble, Manager of Planning and Development. “With the support from ATCO, we’re advancing our environmental goals, setting an example for other communities, and providing the public with more opportunities to access EV charging infrastructure.”

This initiative is supported by the 2024-2027 Strategic Plan and aligns with the Town’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability as outlined in the Environmental Stewardship Strategy. The installation of these chargers will reduce reliance on fossil fuels and expand the EV charging network making electric vehicle use more practical and accessible for residents.
