Urban Agriculture

Urban agriculture can be defined as activities that grow food or raise livestock within urban areas where the products are intended to be distributed off-site and consumed locally.

Following the creation of the Regional Agricultural Master Plan (RAMP) by the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board, the Town of Stony Plain developed its first Urban Agriculture Plan (UAP) to provide guidance on urban agriculture development at the municipal level. The UAP prioritizes urban agriculture by establishing a framework to encourage a variety of urban agriculture methods, supporting production of and access to local food, and ingraining to practice of urban agriculture within the community.

Urban Agriculture in Stony Plain

In May of 2023, the Town established its first urban garden in partnership with MicroHabitat Urban Farming and the Stony Plain Golf Course to produce food locally and educate the community on how they can do the same.

Located at 18 Fairway Drive, Stony Plain, the urban garden includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers that will be donated to local food banks and non-profit organizations. Stony Plain's urban garden is one of the first initiatives that implements and supports efforts to increase education on and action towards urban agriculture.
