Stony Plain’s residential development is up 44% in quarter 2 of 2025 when compared to the same period last year. The number of residential building permits issued rose from 27 in Q2 2024 to 39 in Q2 2025. Most residential permits were for new low density single detached homes totaling 25 of the 39 residential permits issued. The remaining 14 permits were issued for low density semi-detached homes. Of the 75 alteration and addition permits issued this quarter, 64 were for residential improvements. The total value of residential alterations and additions permits also rose by $800,000 compared to the same period last year.

This data underscores growing interest in both new housing and home upgrades, continuing a positive trend in residential investment activity in the second quarter.

“The bottom line is developers are ready to build in Stony Plain especially as we head into the peak of the summer construction season,” says Miles Dibble, Planning and Development Manager. “Permit applications are arriving on time, and shovels are ready to hit the ground. The strong residential demand in Fairways North is clearly reflected in this quarter’s numbers.”

Mayor William Choy adds, “I grew up here, and I’ve always been proud to call Stony Plain home. It means a lot to see more people choosing to build their lives here too. A new home is such a meaningful investment, and the continued demand for permits shows just how much people believe in this community.”

“When compared to the average of the past four years, this quarter’s growth in residential permits is especially impressive,” says Michelle Levasseur, Economic Development Manager. “Between 2020 and 2024, the second-quarter average was 18 residential permits. In Q2 of 2025, that number more than doubled to 39. People are drawn to the quality of life offered here, and the numbers speak for themselves.”
