Why is Uniquely Stony Plain happening?
Since the MDP was originally written in 2013, the Town of Stony Plain has changed and grown, the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board has been dissolved and no longer provides regional planning and growth management direction, and there have been changes in community and regional conditions. The MDP received minor updates and amendments in 2020 and 2024. It has not, however, undergone a comprehensive review of its vision, themes, policies, and growth management strategy since its original adoption, and the growth management assumptions underpinning the plan no longer reflect current trends, development pressures, or infrastructure planning realities. This work aims to ensure that it remains current, relevant, and aligned with contemporary community values, municipal priorities, and changing local and regional conditions.
What is the purpose of Uniquely Stony Plain?
The goal of Uniquely Stony Plain is to provide strategic direction to the Town for the next 30 years by addressing more than just land use; it will address our economy, culture, environment, society, and governance. It will create an overarching framework to link all municipal plans and policies together based on a vision and principles determined by engaging the community. Strategic actions will be identified to ensure the policies are implemented.
What is the Municipal Development Plan?
The Municipal Development Plan (MDP) is a long-term, strategic growth plan that is used by the Town Council for decision-making. It addresses future land use and development in the municipality, the provision of municipal services and facilities, and intermunicipal issues, such as future growth areas, and regional transportation systems and infrastructure.
Specifically, the MDP is a statutory document required by the Provincial Government of Alberta under Section 632 of the Municipal Governance Act. It contains policies about land use, transportation, recreation, economic activity, the environment, and quality of life issues. It must address:
● Future land use within a municipality;
● The manner of and the proposals for future development in a municipality;
● Coordination of land use, future growth patterns, and other infrastructure with adjacent municipalities if there is no Intermunicipal Development Plan with respect to those matters in those municipalities;
● The provision of the required transportation systems, either generally or specifically within the municipality and in relation to adjacent municipalities; and
● The provision of municipal services and facilities, either generally or specifically.
