Changes to Recycling Program Come into Effect on October 1, 2026

STONY PLAIN, AB: Phase two of the enhanced Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) recycling program comes into effect across Alberta on October 1. This program expands the list of accepted recyclable materials for curbside and depot collection.

The new list of accepted recyclable materials includes:

  • Glass containers
  • Foam packaging like meat trays and take out containers
  • Flexible plastic packaging like chip packets, pet food bags and stretchy plastic bags
  • Aerosol containers

All items must be clean, dry, and empty before disposal. The full list of accepted materials can be found on our waste webpage.

Alberta’s EPR program shifts the financial responsibility for recycling from municipalities and taxpayers to the producers of packaging and products. The Town’s current recycling service provider, GFL Environmental, will continue to provide curbside services for Stony Plain residents.

“This program is a big move for increasing the Town’s sustainability,” says Mayor William Choy. “Our community continues to benefit from a wide variety of options for responsible waste management, whether you live in a single-family home or multi-family complex.”

“The more household waste that can go in your blue bags, the more waste we divert from the landfill,” says Paul Simons, Manager of Civic and Municipal Operations. “Between the Rotary Recycling Centre and the increased list of accepted products in blue bags, there are great recycling management solutions in town.”

In addition to curbside blue bag recycling, Stony Plain residents also have access to the Rotary Recycle Centre to drop off blue bag recyclables and organic materials. The Rotary Recycle Centre is open 24/7.
