Columbarium Niches Now Available for Purchase at the Stony Plain Cemetery

STONY PLAIN, AB: Columbarium niches at the new Stony Plain Cemetery are now available for purchase, giving the community the opportunity to begin making arrangements for cemetery services close to home.

The availability of columbarium niches marks the first stage in the tiered opening of the Cemetery. Sales for the cemetery’s remaining interment and memorial options will be introduced in tiers throughout 2026 as each area becomes operational.

“Our ability to begin sales at the cemetery is an important milestone for Stony Plain and for families planning for the future,” says Mayor William Choy. “The impact and legacy this space will have on our community is hard to comprehend; it feels extremely rewarding to be in the final stages of this project.”

Cemetery Services staff will be available to support residents through the columbarium niche purchase process and provide information on available options, timelines, and future service availability.

“With columbarium niches now available for purchase, our team is ready to support residents and the community through the process with care, compassion, and clear information,” says Teresa Olsen, Manager of Legislative Services. “Families are now able to meet with Town staff to learn more about niche options and understand when other interment and memorial services will become available through the tiered opening.”

Once fully open, the cemetery will offer several interment and memorial options:
•    Burial plots, including traditional monument, flat marker, green, and cremation
•    Columbarium niches
•    Family columbaria
•    Dedicated Veteran’s area
•    Scattering garden for the respectful scattering of ashes.

Burial plot services are anticipated to commence in the fall.

As the cemetery continues to open in tiers, Operations staff will continue preparing and maintaining the site to support the tiered opening. This approach will allow the Town to protect the quality of the cemetery grounds while ensuring each area is ready before services begin.

“Our team is focused on ensuring the cemetery grounds are safe, welcoming, and well maintained as each tier becomes operational,” says Paul Simons, Manager of Civic and Municipal Operations. “The tiered approach allows landscaping to properly establish and helps preserve the long-term appearance, stability, and care of the site.”
