Commercial Improvements Booming in Stony Plain

Stony Plain approved thirty-four (34) permits for commercial improvements in the first quarter of 2023, up over 275% from the first quarter of 2022 and 750% from 2021. The permits demonstrate a positive increase in commercial activity in Stony Plain as the industry rebounds following the pandemic.

Planning Supervisor Justin Young says, “The first quarter permit statistics indicate healthy activity in Stony Plain’s commercial sector, especially considering the community’s population of eighteen thousand. These statistics indicate businesses in Stony Plain’s more established commercial districts are investing to scale up.”

Economic Development Officer Michelle Levasseur adds, “People sometimes underestimate Stony Plain. As the gateway between western Alberta and the Edmonton Metropolitan Region (EMR), Stony Plain is a central corridor for over 180,000 people that rely on services throughout the region. Additionally, as one of the last service hubs between Parkland County’s Lakes and the Rocky Mountains, Stony Plain sees thousands of people from the EMR loading up on essentials or grabbing forgotten comfort items before hitting the road. So, it’s not surprising to see businesses investing in themselves to ensure they remain competitive and offer the unparalleled retail experience Stony Plain is known for.”

Mike Klein, the owner of Stellar Homes, which specializes in residential and commercial, says, “Stony Plain is a supportive municipality. My relationship with Stony Plain enabled the development of the municipality’s southwest corner, which has supported growth throughout the community. This quarter’s permit statistics are promising and could indicate a productive year ahead for Stony Plain.”

In addition to the thirty-four (34) commercial improvements, there were four (4) industrial improvements and one (1) institutional improvement with a combined estimated construction value of $1.3 million. Other permits include thirteen (13) housing starts, including nine (9) single detached dwellings and four medium-density dwellings with a combined estimated construction value of $4.8 million.
