Construction Begins on Nondenominational Municipal Cemetery

STONY PLAIN, AB: Construction is underway on the new nondenominational municipal cemetery. Located on Rosenthal Road (Range Road 12), Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed by October 2025, and the cemetery is anticipated to open in 2026.

“The start of construction marks an exciting milestone for our community,” says Mayor William Choy. “We’re creating a space that will serve residents for generations to come and provide a meaningful place to honour and remember loved ones.”

“This project has been years in the making, and the start of construction is a significant step toward delivering this long-prioritized service,” says Manager of Engineering Khalid Aziz. “With the Cemetery Bylaw now in place, we’re moving forward with a strong foundation for operations, care, and long-term sustainability.”

Planning for the cemetery began in 2010, and administrative preparations are now underway to support its 2026 opening, including establishing operational procedures and setting fee structures.
