Construction Progresses on Stony Plain’s Municipal Cemetery
STONY PLAIN, AB: Construction continues on Stony Plain’s non-denominational municipal cemetery. Paving throughout the site is now complete, and some landscaping work, including tree planting, has been carried out. Work is also underway on the installation of monuments, and the development of a scenic hilltop trail overlooking the site. Landscaping will continue through the fall, with completion expected ahead of the cemetery’s opening next year.
“The Municipal Cemetery is a project that has been close to our residents’ hearts for many years,” says Mayor William Choy. “It has been very gratifying to watch the site develop throughout this construction season.”
“This project has been in the making for a long time, so watching it physically take shape this year has been very rewarding,” says Manager of Engineering Khalid Aziz. “A cemetery is an important place within a community, and we’re proud to create a meaningful space for current and future generations of residents.”
Planning for the cemetery began in 2010, and administrative work is underway to support its 2026 opening, including finalizing operational procedures and setting fee structures.
